1998 may not feel like that long ago, but in the tech world, it may as well have been ancient times. Great computers cost close to $5,000 and high-end monitors were nearly as much. Windows 98 was cutting edge and the first iMac had just been released. PC gamers were playing Half-Life, StarCraft: Brood War, and Unreal. AOL was still the largest internet service provider, powering close to 20 million users (and also providing millions more with free “coasters”). Google was in beta, AltaVista and Yahoo! dominated search. And on September 10, 1998, Demian Sellfors placed a few servers in his closet, plugged in an ethernet cable, and started Media Temple.

Originally released in 1995, the Apache web server is a true Internet old-timer. Of course it’s true that newer, more nimble open-source web servers have come along in the last twenty years—you’re probably familiar with Nginx—but Apache still operates on the lion’s share of servers worldwide, with most estimates pegging its stake at 40-50% of all web-facing servers.
